The Directorate General of Highways (DGH) in Taiwan said its geographic information system proved to be an effective tool for disaster management when Typhoon Fanapi hit the region last month.

The disaster information provided by the system allowed the DGH to keep motorists away from vulnerable road sections.

The agency said the system monitored the roads in real-time and tracked 66 affected road sections that suffered damage due to the typhoon.

The system has also encouraged cross-department collaboration where government agencies can share instant typhoon information for better disaster response, according to taipeitimes.com.

The system is partially open to the public and the agency will take the system online in the future.
