India is planning to implement a uniform electronic toll collection system on its national highways.

The system, which is expected to use passive RFID technology, is scheduled to be in place by May 2012.

Under the new system, each vehicle will have an RFID tag, a tag reader and an account that will be recharged by the owner using the RFID tag number.

An appropriate toll is expected to be debited from the vehicle’s account whenever it passes through the lane of any toll plaza.

The move will increase revenue, curb leakages and ensure smooth travel across the country, according to traffictechnologytoday.com.

India is looking at increasing the length of highways covered under its tolling system from 8,500km to at least 30,000km in the next five years.
