Ireland’s Road Safety Authority (RSA) said that excessive or inappropriate speeding led to 80 deaths on the country’s roads in 2009.

The authority said speeding was the main cause for one-third of road deaths in Ireland and 11,000 fatalities in the EU.

The RSA also said it this year’s death toll has reached 89 so far, according to irishtimes.com.

Reducing speed by 5% could save around 50 lives and prevent about 100 serious injuries on Irish roads every year, according to the RSA.

An Irish official said one-third of the people killed on Irish roads are pedestrians.
