The UK is testing new cameras that use satellites to measure average speed over long distances and track motorists from space.

The cameras, identical to those used in roadworks, employ both the number plate reading technology and the GPS.

Breakdown service The AA said the new system, intended to work in any weather conditions, could handle a network of streets.

Developed by American-owned company PIPS Technology based in England, the system can calculate the average speed between any two points in the network.

The system is expected to aid in congestion reduction, speed enforcement and reduce the need for speed humps, according to telegraph.co.uk.

The technology, known as SpeedSpike, is expected to be used in residential areas.

The solution is currently being tested in London’s Southwark and in parts of Cornwall.
