Germany-based INIT will provide the Tri-Country Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) with an integrated vehicle location and passenger counting system to monitor their fleet of over 1,200 vehicles.

The system will also have a digital mobile radio system, which the company will build in cooperation with GE Transportation.

The company will install the system on nearly 1,200 para-transit, fixed route buses, light rail and supervisory vehicles.

The nearly $35m contract is due to start in October 2009 and will run for an initial two years.

The system will be provided by the company’s US subsidiary INIT Innovations in Transportation.

TriMet operates extensive bus lines as well as a light rail and para-transit network in the Portland region, serving over 1 million inhabitants.
