The Republic of Angola has inaugurated a $29m bridge over the River Cunene in Xangongo – the largest bridge in the country.

The 880m long and 11.64m wide concrete-built bridge features two 4m lanes and pedestrian sidewalks, and can support nearly 100 tons of weight.

The bridge is located in the south of Angola and links the municipalities of Cuanhama and Ombadja, allowing road access to the provinces of Huíla, Huambo, Benguela, Bengo and Luanda, as well as to neighbouring South Africa and Namibia.

The bridge’s lighting is powered by solar panels based on Chinese technology.

The construction work took nearly two-and-a-half months and was been carried out by a subsidiary of the China Road and Bridge Corporation.
