Primco, a US-based general contractor, has secured a construction contract from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to rebuild the Burlington Drive bridge over the US 35 (State Road 3/67) Muncie bypass.

The construction contract worth $1.6m will require closing the overpass for up to 130 days starting in early April, the bridge is expected to be open to traffic in mid-August this year.

INDOT further added that a specific closure date will be announced later.

"The transport agency added that the bypass will continue to be open to two lanes in each direction during most of the project."

Prior to construction, the company crews will be deployed at the site to clear right-of-way, as well as relocating utility lines in the area.

During the construction works, the traffic will be re-directed to Meeker Avenue via Delaware County Road 300 South and East Memorial Drive, and the median and outside shoulders in both directions of the bypass will be closed off by temporary concrete barriers.

The transport agency added that the bypass will continue to be open to two lanes in each direction during most of the project.

It further said some lane closures can be expected for some operations, such as during demolition of the existing deck, setting of the new beams, and painting of the new bridge.

Speed restrictions will come into affect at the work zone, and the speed will be reduced to 55mph and further reduced to 45mph when workers are present and lights are flashing.
