Malaysia’s Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has made a commitment to bid for 4,000km of roads, valued at Rs80bn ($1.2bn), in Rajasthan, India.

CIDB is a statutory body under Malaysia’s Ministry of Works.

Rajasthan Transport and PWD Minister Yunus Khan was quoted by PTI as saying that the CIBD has signed MoUs worth Rs100bn ($1.5bn) with the state government for road development.

"Five sub-project proposals of north-east connectivity projects have been posed to the Government of Japan / JICA."

CIDB will invest Rs80bn on approximately 60 road projects, the minister said.

This development comes after a Malaysian delegation with the state’s chief minister in October, which discussed the possibility of public private partnership for the construction of road projects in the state.

CIDB was then invited to invest in the construction of highways and Jaipur Metro.

The Indian Government recently ordered the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to compensate developers for delays in road projects not attributable to them.

This decision was expected to unlock investments worth $350bn ($5.2bn).

Last month, Union coal and power minister Piyush Goyal was quoted by The Economic Times as saying: "The cabinet has taken a very bold decision to allow the ministry of road transport and highways to go into the merits of each case and wherever the delays are not attributable to the developer, to extend the tolling period if that should be required and take such measures, which will once again revive these toll projects and get them to operation."

Earlier this month, the Indian Government announced that it is taking up road projects valued worth more than Rs500bn ($7.4bn) in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

It was also reported that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing Rs49.23bn ($737.47m) for five road development projects in north-east India.

Indian Union Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said: "Five sub-project proposals of north-east connectivity projects have been posed to the Government of Japan / JICA for Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) official development assistance (ODA) loan for Rs49.23bn."

Around Rs2.85bn ($42.6m) and Rs16.61bn ($248.8m) had been respectively set aside for improvements to NH-51 and NH-54.
