Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has unveiled a directional-indicator system that illuminates projections onto road surfaces at night, in order to help other drivers and pedestrians comprehend the vehicle’s intended path.

Other drivers and pedestrians would be able to comprehend whether the vehicle is moving forward, backward or turning, and even making emergency stops.

"The directional-indicator system projects large, easy-to-understand animated illuminations onto road surfaces."

The technology has been developed to reduce road accidents while lowering the potential confusion of nearby drivers and pedestrians.

According to research from the Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis, 70% of the pedestrian accidents on roads happen at night.

The company will display the selected features of the new system with Mitsubishi Electric’s EMIRAI3 xDAS concept car at the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015 in Tokyo, Japan, from 29 October to 8 November.

Besides Mitsubishi, several other car manufacturers are thinking of innovative ways to use LED lights to help drivers at night. Earlier this month, BMW introduced its Welcome Light Carpet technology for its 7 Series.

With just a click of the key fob, the bottom of a BMW car generates a bright illumination, which would enable drivers to find their parked vehicles at night.
