BAE Systems has started work on a £5m road infrastructure project that is expected to improve transport links in Renfrewshire, Scotland.

The new 1.7km road will link the north and south sections of the Dargavel Village housing element of the former Royal Ordinance site in Bishopton, while facilitating the transfer of commuter traffic away from the main Bishopton village access routes.

Undertaken in collaboration with Raynesway Construction, construction of the new route between Slateford Road and Barrangary Road highlights BAE’s commitment to support the local community and economy.

Scottish Transport Minister Derek Mackay said: "This is an important development for the continuing regeneration of the Bishopton area.

BAE Systems Bishopton programme manager Jon Gettinby said: "Creating this vital transport link between the north and south of the Dargavel housing development will provide a further essential infrastructure to support Bishopton and the local community in and around the town."

More than 40 people are said to be currently working on the project, which is scheduled to be completed in early 2016.

Under a multimillion pound project, BAE is currently redeveloping the 1,800-acre former Royal Ordinance site into new housing, community and commercial developments and public open space.
