US-based navigation and communication devices manufacturer Garmin International has unveiled a portable navigation device (PND) for drivers.

The new nüviCam LMTHD features a built-in high-definition dash camera that continuously records and automatically saves files on impact and provides advanced alerts in a bid to improve driver awareness on the road.

The nüviCam offers the protection of having an eyewitness that records the exact occurrence of events, comes with driver-assist features and uses active lane guidance to make sure they never miss a turn.

Forward collision warning alerts drivers if they are driving too close to the car ahead and lane departure warning alerts will appear and sound if the driver glides off the road.

Garmin Real Vision directs drivers where to go when approaching select destinations by displaying the camera view along with a bright arrow.

Garmin vice-president of worldwide sales Dan Bartel said: "The nüviCam LMTHD goes beyond helping drivers get from Point A to Point B.

"The intuitive driver-assist features not only lessen the stress of getting you to your destination, but the nüviCam also provides peace of mind in knowing that your commute is being recorded and can be referenced should you need it."

The nüviCam features a 6in pinch-to-zoom glass display with its dash camera, which continuously records on the included microSD card when switched on.

According to the company, the incident detection of nüviCam will automatically save files on impact if an incident occurs. It also has a snapshot feature that allows drivers to capture still images in or outside of the vehicle, voice-activated navigation and Bluetooth wireless technology.

The device can also be used with the Garmin BC 30 Wireless Backup Camera to see what is behind their vehicle when they reverse it.
