A30

Kier Group has secured a £33m contract from the Highways Agency to dual the A30 between Temple and Higher Carblake in Cornwall, UK.

Cornwall Council will work with the Highways Agency to part-fund and deliver the project, and work under the project is expected to start in March and would last for 22 months.

The new road is set to open to the public in early 2017.

According to Kier Group, the scheme will dual the single carriageway’s last section on the A30 between the M5 at Exeter and the Carland Cross junction with the 4.5km A39 north of Truro.

Traffic congestion will be eased following the improvements in the busy part of the region.

“It’s a strategically important scheme for the region, providing much-needed highways improvements and increased capacity.”

The UK Government had highlighted 84 schemes in its recent £15bn Autumn Statement announcement, which will see capital funding used to repair the road network in the country and the latest project is sad to be an additional investment to the scheme.

Kier Infrastructure executive director Sean Jeffrey said: “The award of this capital investment project, working with Cornwall Council and the Highways Agency, is an excellent demonstration of Kier’s increasing presence in the capex highways market.

“It’s a strategically important scheme for the region, providing much-needed highways improvements and increased capacity, so we are delighted to have been chosen to deliver the project.”

The contract, which involves dualling of the 5km stretch of road, is expected to play a major role in reducing delays on the A30, which currently cost more than £10m a year in lost time alone.

The main highway route A30 links Cornwall to the regional and national strategic road networks and connects the county to the rest of the UK.
