M60 and M62 motorway

UK infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has won a £184m project to upgrade a 17-mile section of the M60 and M62 motorways.

The upgrade is expected to increase capacity, reduce congestion and shorten journey times for motorists.

The project will be led by Balfour Beatty, in collaboration with the three other framework delivery partners; Costain, Carillion and a BAM Nuttall Morgan Sindall joint venture.

Balfour Beatty executive chairman Steve Marshall said the company has been working with the Highways Agency for 20 years and looks forward to building on that successful relationship.

“This scheme will benefit the 180,000 road users that pass through this section of the motorway network every day,” Marshall said.

“We are committed to lead this project in a collaborative way with our partners.”

Construction work will involve gantry installation and refurbishment, new static and variable signs, lighting, concrete safety barriers, drainage and surfacing works.

Due to the proximity of the scheme to a large concentration of businesses and residents, the company has said that it will select a public liaison team throughout construction.

Construction will begin in July and will employ 1,000 workers at its peak. Its completion is scheduled for late 2017.
