Dalma Mall Road Improvements project

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport (DoT) has opened its AED77m ($20.9m) Dalma Mall road improvements project.

Implemented to the east of Abu Dhabi, the project connects Mohammad Bin Zayed City to the Mussafah industrial area near Dalma Mall. The improvements are part of the city’s plan to upgrade its overall transport infrastructure to international standards.

It serves several new residential communities in Abu Dhabi and improves traffic flow in one of the fastest growing communities with high traffic congestion.

Abu Dhabi DoT main roads acting general director Khalid Rashid Deemas Al-Suwaidi said that this project has provided an appropriate exit from Dalma Mall.

"The area is one of the fastest growing locations, with Dalma Mall and neighbouring areas taking a prime role."

"The area is one of the fastest growing locations, with Dalma Mall and neighbouring areas taking a prime role," Al-Suwaidi said.

"The DoT’s studies for the area has aimed to ease the traffic congestion whilst helping motorists to reach their destinations on time and conveniently."

The Dalma Mall interchange improvements project has been implemented by the use of a diverging diamond interchange (DDI), a new approach in transportation design solutions to be first advocated by a transport department in the Middle East.

The DDI leverages the existing bridges and ramps by modifying their configuration and changing the nearby roundabouts to signalised DDI intersections, resulting in improved traffic flow around the mall, increased road capacity, reduced congestion and improved safety.

In addition, the DoT is looking into the pedestrians’ needs in the area, with bridges for passers-by yet to be constructed to ensure safety and security.
