A US-based joint-venture team consisting of Granite Construction subsidiary Kenny Construction Company and Edward Kraemer & Sons has been awarded a $75m bridge project by the Illinois Tollway.

The project involves the reconstruction and widening of the bridge. Granite said it will book its 41% share, or approximately $31m, into backlog during the second quarter of 2014.

“The team will be responsible for building two new bridge structures that will increase the capacity of the Fox River Bridge.”

Under the contract, the team will be responsible for building two new bridge structures that will increase the capacity of the Fox River Bridge from six lanes to eight lanes with full shoulders to accommodate the new, wider Interstate 90 roadway.

The new bridges will be 1,315ft in length and will stand 40ft above the Fox River. They will have eight spans supported by seven piers, compared to 14 piers of the existing structures.

These fewer piers will reduce the environmental impact on the waterway and forested fen below.

The project is expected to commence in June and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016.

The bridge will remain open with three lanes in each direction being maintained during peak hours.

Granite Construction is one of the major infrastructure contractors and construction materials producers and focuses on complex infrastructure projects, including transportation, industrial and federal contracting.

Last month, Granite Construction has announced that it has been awarded a $34m highway improvement project by the Arizona Department of Transportation.
