The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved a $47m loan for a project to improve the quality of the road connecting Manzini and Mbadlane in the area of Manzini, Swaziland.

The road also connects to the main tourist and social infrastructure situated in Manzini, and directly links to South Africa, Swaziland’s largest trading partner.

In addition, the project will provide easy access to the new international airport serving the entire population, as well as employment for more than 250,000 people in the city of Manzini.

AfDB department for transport and information and communication technologies director Amadou Oumarou said: "The development objective is to improve regional interconnectivity thus improve efficiency within the trade value-chain, particularly on exports, to increase trade flow and generate revenue for the country and thus reduce poverty."

"Meanwhile, AfDB also approved a transport sector support project for Senegal for approximately $35m."

The funding, which is provided through the African Development Fund (ADF), will serve for the rehabilitation of the Dinguiraye-Nioro-Keur Ayib road in the Kaolack region to address the problems of accessibility and opening up of the project area in particular.
