Johnson County Gateway Phase 2 Project

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has broken ground on the $288m Johnson County Gateway Phase 2 Project in Lenexa.

The I-435/I-35/K-10 interchange currently carries more than 230,000 vehicles, the number which is projected to increase to 380,000 by 2040.

The three-year project will improve 90% of the existing traffic problems that drivers experience every day, along with 50% percent of the estimated 2040 traffic problems.

KDOT selected Gateway Interchange Constructors (GIC) as the design-build team to complete the phase 2 portion of the Gateway Project in January. GIC is a joint venture led by Clarkson Construction Co partnered with Kiewit Infrastructure Co. Key members in the team include local design firms HDR Engineering and George Butler Associates.

The budget for the project includes T-WORKS construction funding, additional funding from the cities of Lenexa and Olathe, as well as funding for design and engineering work. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring.
