CA Traffic, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of traffic data monitoring equipment, has recently been awarded a contract for a journey time system for Leeds City Council.
The contract will comprise of the supply of over 30 ANPR cameras to be installed at various locations throughout the city to monitor traffic levels and journey times. CA Traffic’s unique Evo8 ANPR camera is stylish, simple to use and provides two-lane coverage at a price more usually associated with a single-lane camera. Number plate detection is accomplished by processing of the camera video signal therefore eliminating the requirement for external triggers such as loops or lasers. An integral infra-red illuminator enables detection in all lighting conditions.
In addition to the original requirements of the contract, CA Traffic offered Evolution, the company’s hosted UTMC compatible journey time system, to manage the data collection. Evolution processes Evo8 data from Leeds then forwards both the raw and processed data into the authority’s UTMC database via a secure VPN connection. The advantage of this system is the cost saving offered to the client through removing the need to purchase the hardware infrastructure for separate journey time software.
Bernard Greene, managing director, comments, “We have developed the web-service-based in-station system to provide the client with the most cost-effective journey time solution. This approach avoids the need for more hardware in the client’s offices and the consequential costs of IT support. The system will cater for all of Leeds’ future journey time needs and be fully supported and maintained by CA Traffic.”
The system is working very well and demonstrates both the ease of set up and the effectiveness of the in-station server concept. Gordon Robertson, responsible for implementing UTMC for Leeds City Council, said, “We are delighted with the cost-effective advantages of CA’s complete journey time system. When fully implemented, it will provide the council and the public with an immense amount of useful travel information, both live and historical.”
CA Traffic prides itself on offering a different approach using state-of-the-art technology and this contract is a prime example of its focus on flexibility and ease of use for the client.
