Westcotec have always been at the forefront of vehicle-activated sign technology, pushing the boundaries of what is possible to reduce incidents on the highway. Detection methods utilising radar, laser, ultrasonic and loops are on the list and have all been previously used.
Thermal / visual detection had never been considered until a meeting with FLIR Systems during a highways exhibition. Products were purchased and put on trial with fantastic results; however, before offering this service to existing customers training was required.
Hosted by FLIR, the course was designed to give the knowledge and skills to set up visual/thermal systems as individuals without the need of accompaniment from a FLIR employee. The most valuable lesson was the integration to Westcotec electronic signs.
There are numerous options available designed to reduce casualties such as collision avoidance systems, pedestrian safety systems and cycle safety systems. Messages can be displayed on Westcotec electronic signs when certain conditions are met.
