With pedestrian fatalities on the rise, DSTA has engineered a solution which addresses citizen safety by increasing awareness. By using the latest LED technology, DSTA has created an LED LightLine which is embedded into the pavement, just before the pedestrian crossing, warning pedestrians when to cross the street. The LED strip is synchronised with the traffic light controller and changes color accordingly; red when the vehicle traffic light is green and green when the pedestrians are advised to cross the street.
What is particularly effective about this solution is that it provides greater signaling directly spread at the feet of the pedestrian, in addition to the normal traffic light. From DSTA experience, the best way to prevent pedestrian fatalities is by increasing general awareness of the potential road risks; the lighting and signage aspects are therefore crucial. This solution is not only directed at pedestrians, but also at vehicles. If the pedestrian crossing is more visible in the dark, compared to its surroundings, it also sends an additional warning signal to vehicles that a pedestrian is present, reducing the likelihood of an accident happening in the first place.
DSTA has already installed various pilot tests in the Spanish cities of Burgos and Tarrassa and the results have been overwhelming, with new and larger orders for cities all over Spain. Apart from the obvious safety benefits, the Lightline also catches the attention of city council authorities and media worldwide. The main reason is because it is an innovative solution, unique and it requires very little maintenance (Product life cycle is approx 100,000h) meaning it is environmentally friendly as well as people friendly.
