US-based modular steel bridging solutions provider Acrow Bridge has designed and supplied a temporary bridge to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) for use during the $4m Wilmot Road project.

The temporary bridge will replace the Interstate 10 (I-10) bridge decks over Wilmot Road on Tucson’s southeast side.

Following the successful project on I-10 last year, ADOT has chosen Acrow’s structure for the I-10 bridge renovation.

The assignment marks Acrow’s second project in a little more than a year from ADOT aimed at minimising the impact of the work zone during bridge renovation projects in Tuscon.

“After completion of deck renovation, the eastbound traffic will return to its original lanes, while westbound traffic will move to Acrow’s temporary structure.”

I-10 is the main east-west Interstate highway across Arizona, and is heavily used by both commercial and private vehicles. Built in the 1950s and 1960s, the highway frequently needs to be renovated and improved.

For the Wilmot Road project, Acrow installed a 200t, 200ft-long modular bridge in late April, opening it to traffic the following month.

The temporary bridge was built on-site and assembled in the space between the existing bridges. The detour bridge carried eastbound traffic during deck renovation on the route.

After completion of deck renovation, the eastbound traffic will return to its original lanes, while westbound traffic will move to Acrow’s temporary structure.

The Wilmot Road project is slated for completion in December.

Acrow Bridge CEO Bill Killeen said: “Acrow’s modular bridges, available for rent or purchase, are a great choice for detours when state DOTs and contractors need to stay on or ahead of schedule and, at the same time, assure motorist and worker safety.”
