The City of Grand Rapids in Michigan, US, has unveiled plans to improve 27 miles of road this fiscal year.

The city commission is currently assessing the road construction plan from July this year to June next year, which will involve an investment of $11.8m.

If approved and implemented, the plan is set to bring the total miles of streets to be rehabilitated over the past six years to 310.

The start date of these street construction projects were not specified, while some of them may be carried over to the next construction season.

Grand Rapids interim city manager Eric DeLong said: “Nearly every corner of Grand Rapids will see some sort of road construction this summer.

“We have been busy making a $13.3m at 237 locations over the past year. We are planning improvements on an additional 27 miles of streets this coming fiscal year with an investment of $11.8m at 64 locations.”

Under its Vital Streets programme, Grand Rapids will have completed preventative maintenance and reconstruction on 283 miles of streets by June this year since 2014.

The initiative has improved the state of the streets in good and fair conditions from 37% to 58%.

This Vital Streets programme is supported by a voter-approved plan in 2014 extending the local income tax levy for 15 years.

Vital Street investment, with a road funding commitment by the State of Michigan, aims to improve 70% of Grand Rapids city streets to good condition from fair within 15 years.
