Efkon

‘Intelligent’ transportation systems and tolling services provider Efkon has been awarded a contract by Austrian road operator ASFINAG to modernise the national toll sticker monitoring system.

Efkon will supply monitoring equipment for the automatic enforcement of Austria’s Automatische Vignettenkontrolle (AVK) national toll sticker system.

ASFINAG originally placed an order for AVK systems from Efkon in 2010 for fully automatic identification of toll violators on the country’s motorways, with a follow-up order for more systems in 2012.

These systems and their high-precision image analysis have helped ASFINAG achieve a significant increase in the recognition and enforcement rate.

Efkon’s automatic toll sticker monitoring system provides high reliability and improved results even under critical light and weather conditions as well as for vehicles travelling far in excess of the speed limit on Austria’s motorways, the company said.

The system can alco capture and read the small 5mm punched holes in the two-month and ten-day variants of the Austrian toll sticker for passenger cars.

"We are still at the beginning of our expansion and integration opportunities."

ASFINAG will deploy the new system along motorways without emergency stopping lanes, multi-lane highways in urban and metropolitan areas as well as places where safety concerns prevent toll monitoring by staff.

Efkon chief technology officer Robert Monsberger said: "We have proven our competence in automatic enforcement and monitoring and see us as the clear technology and quality leader.

"The market potential in this segment is far from being exhausted and we are still at the beginning of our expansion and integration opportunities."
