RMTC Goiânia has selected a partnership between Ericsson and Volvo Bus Latin America to enhance the intelligent transport system in a bid to support its daily operations in Goiânia, Brazil.

As part of the development, Volvo Bus Latin America’s ITS4Mobility system will be combined with Ericsson’s services and systems to improve the RMTC Goiânia’s smart transportation system.

Ericsson will be responsible for the localisation of the solution according to Goiânia’s specific needs, as well as provide support and maintenance.

RMTC Goiânia is a group of enterprises responsible for public transportation in Brazil’s sixth largest city, currently operating 1,300 buses and 6,000 bus stops.

"This agreement is proof of Ericsson’s leadership in this sector, and an example of the positive transformation that the transportation sector is developing."

Volvo Bus Latin America president Luis Carlos Pimenta said: "A quality public transportation service that is recognised as such by the users must have a passenger information system, so that people can plan their trips and optimise their time."

With the new enhancement, Goiânia bus operators will be able to track the fleet in real-time by accessing information on travel times, punctuality and quantity of buses on each route.

Bus operators can use this information to efficiently distribute the buses and provide a better service to passengers, Ericsson stated.

Meanwhile, passengers will benefit from real-time information about arrival times and locations of the buses through the internet and smartphone apps.

CU Industry and Society RLAM head Jo Arne Lindstad said: "Smart transportation systems are complex, because they require the integration of information and communication technologies with the current transportation infrastructure, fleets and passengers.

"This agreement is proof of Ericsson’s leadership in this sector, and an example of the positive transformation that the transportation sector is developing.

With this development, Goiânia will the first city in Brazil and Latin America to benefit from Volvo’s ITS4Mobility solution.
