Florida Department of Transportation (FDoT) in the US has entered into a data sharing partnership with the navigation app Waze to provide motorists with up-to-date traffic information.

The new partnership will see FDoT and Waze non-exclusively cross-license their traffic data to each other, in order to improve their ability to deliver required traffic information.

Speaking about the development, FDoT secretary Ananth Prasad said: "This data sharing is another example of a public-private partnership, as it brings together infrastructure and technical experts that will greatly benefit motorists."

"FDoT’s partnership with Waze places us at the forefront of innovation and enables us to use real-time data in our transportation decisions."

Under the deal, Waze will provide FDoT with access to its real-time data to manage roadways and operations, as well as traffic incident notification services, while the department will credit Waze as the data source.

Florida State Senator Jeff Brandes said: "FDoT’s symbiotic partnership with Waze places us at the forefront of innovation and enables us to use real-time data in our transportation decisions."

Traffic service Florida 511 currently provides real-time information on the state’s toll roads, motorways and major metropolitan roadways.

With the new partnership, Waze’s data will help FDoT to offer enhanced traffic information on crashes, congestion and construction, while providing segment travel times.

Waze spokesperson Julie Mossler said: "We look forward to supporting FDoT’s efforts to reduce congestion and respond to Floridians’ needs even faster with an enhanced stream of real-time information."

Motorists can receive updates on traffic and roadway conditions through Florida 511 by phone, app or website.
