Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company will deploy up to 20 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across their service territories in the US state of Kentucky.

The project, which has received approval from the Kentucky Public Service Commission, will also allow business customers to host charging stations at their locations.

Business customers who are interested in hosting charging stations will be allowed to install stations anywhere within their property.

The charging stations will be installed at parking lots, near street parking and other outdoor locations to be used by public.

Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company customer services vice president John P Malloy said: "Launching this new service, both in public access areas and for business customers interested in hosting charging stations, will further support electric vehicle drivers by improving their accessibility to regional charging stations."

The EV charging stations will be integrated with the latest safety features that include charging plugs which can lock in the stand when the stations are not in use.

They will also feature digital display screens and quick-pay options to enhance customer experience.

"Launching this new service, both in public access areas and for business customers interested in hosting charging stations, will further support electric vehicle drivers by improving their accessibility to regional charging stations."

Malloy added: "Through our existing electric infrastructure, this new utility service allows us to support our customers who are concerned about their transportation environmental footprint and own electric vehicles."

Currently, the US has a total of 30 public charging stations across the country, of which 19 are in the LG&E and KU service territories.

Since 2010, more than 750 plug-in electric hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles have been registered in Kentucky, stated the Electric Power Research Institute.

Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company are part of the PPL Corporation.
