Tobin Bridge

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDoT) has started initial testing of new all-electronic tolling (AET) system at Tobin Bridge.

MassDoT has deployed the necessary cameras and toll collection technology at the Rutherford Ave or Interstate 93 exits.

Cameras will capture images of the licence plate, which will allow the transportation department to bill vehicle owners who do not have an E-ZPass transponder.

The department said motorists may notice a flash associated with the testing.

This initial phase will test the image clarity when captured by the cameras, examine connections to the back office computers and the interface with the Massachusetts registry of motor vehicles.

"With the AET system testing, MassDoT aims to identify any failure points and make corrections in advance of the permanent installation."

The testing phase will also compare the actual collection at the existing toll plaza with the tolls recorded by the AET system, which will allow the department to assess performance during heavy traffic, as well as account for varying weather conditions.

With the AET system testing, MassDoT aims to identify any failure points and make corrections in advance of the permanent installation.

AET will go live on Tobin Bridge later this year, eliminating the need for commuters to stop or slow down to pay their toll.

MassDoT aims to convert the state’s toll road network to AET by mid-2016.
