‘Intelligent’ transportation systems manufacturer and supplier McCain has rolled out its rectangular rapid-flashing beacon (RRFB) to improve pedestrian safety.

The active system produces a high-intensity LED flash, alerting approaching vehicles that pedestrians are present.

McCain claims that its new RRFB helps cut down these incidents by commanding driver attention day and night.

The RRFB is capable of reducing crashes between vehicles and pedestrians at intersections without signals as well as at mid-block crosswalks.

McCain technical sales representative Jim Fauconnier said: "With a number of local and national initiatives encouraging these alternative means of transportation for health and environmental reasons, it is more important than ever that we, as an industry, identify ways to protect all road users.

"It is more important than ever that we, as an industry, identify ways to protect all road users."

"By increasing driver awareness, our RRFB does just that; protects lives and creates more livable streets."

Following a study confirming the effectiveness, the Federal Highway Administration has given an interim approval of the RRFB in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

McCain will display the RRFB at the NorCal Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) 41st Annual Vendor Night on 20 March.
