MHI Highway TMS in Sri Lanka

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has completed installation of a highway traffic management system (HTMS) on Sri Lanka’s Southern Expressway spanning from Colombo to Matara, a distance of 120km.

The HTMS is expected to contribute significantly to improve road traffic safety and reduced congestion on a local expressway.

The construction work was carried out under a grant-in-aid provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Under the agreement concluded in November 2013 with the Sri Lankan authority the Road Development Authority (RDA), MHI has managed all aspects from engineering, procurement and installation to adjustment and operation training.

"Sri Lanka’s Southern Expressway will eventually be connected into neighbouring expressways already in operation."

MHI provided around 30 sets of full-colour traffic information signboards, around 40 sets of vehicle detection cameras, weather sensors and other roadside equipment, as well as the central computer systems for data processing and operating status monitoring.

Oriental Consultants and East Nippon Expressway Company (NEXCO East) were responsible for carrying out preliminary design work and construction supervision for this project.

Opened in November 2011, Sri Lanka’s Southern Expressway will eventually be connected into neighbouring expressways already in operation.

Additionally, new expressway is being built in the country to facilitate the expected increase in vehicle traffic in the future.

The newly HTMS offers expressway users with timely traffic information during rough weather and helps to prevent congestion and accidents caused by natural disasters.

With the delivery of the new HTMS complete in Sri Lanka, MHI now intends to focus efforts into sales expansion in overseas markets through proposals of traffic management system specifications and functions best suited to the situations of the emerging economies.
