The New York and New Jersey Port Authority has announced the completion of two projects to deploy 15 variable message signs (VMS) on the approach roads to the George Washington Bridge (GWB).

The VMSs provide travellers with latest information on travel times, traffic conditions and alternate routes, along with offering trip planning options.

Port Authority executive director Pat Foye said: "Variable message signs are the most efficient means for notifying motorists of changes in traffic patterns and road conditions on the George Washington Bridge, the world’s busiest crossing

"By working closely with other agencies to complete the VMS installation, the Port Authority has advanced its commitment to improving the transportation infrastructure that fuels our region’s economy."

The new smart signs, which are located on state highways on both sides of the bridge, mark the final part of a roadway construction and improvement plan approved by the Port Authority Board of Commissioners in 2012.

"The VMS installation will improve Port Authority operations at the bridge."

Port Authority deputy-executive director Deborah Gramiccioni said: "Relaying real-time traffic information on the George Washington Bridge will facilitate the movement of people and goods throughout our region.

"In addition to reducing accidents and informing travelers, the VMS installation will improve Port Authority operations at the bridge in a smart, cost-effective, and efficient manner."

This initiative by the Port Authority is estimated to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions equivalent to reducing oil consumption by nearly 1,700 barrels annually.

In addition, the new VMS installation will reduce traffic congestion with the efficient balancing of traffic between the upper and lower level roadways.
