Production of China’s Transit Elevated Bus (TEB), an elevated transit system that was first showcased at the China Beijing International High-Tech Expo held in May this year, will commence this week.

TEB will comprise of four cars in total, with each car being 22m in length , 7.8 metres in width and 4.8m in height.

The first model will be manufactured by Jinchuang Corp, which is located in Changzhou, China, reported Shanghaiist.com.

"The new TEB costs five times less than a subway system."

Test drives for the TEB are scheduled for August this year.

Jinchuang chief engineer of the project Song Youzhou was quoted by the website as saying: "Some portion of the bus will be made of glass to make passengers feel less confined."

Song further added that the bus can carry up to 1,200 passengers and will operate using electric power.

It can move at a speed of 60kmph.

As the TEB moves on the road, it enables cars and small vehicles to drive underneath.

Song also noted that the new TEB costs five times less than a subway system.
