Californian-based transportation network firm Lyft has announced that all the electric and autonomous vehicles operating on its app will be completely powered by clean energy.

Earlier this month, Lyft announced that it is teaming up with self-driving technology firm NuTonomy to deploy two autonomous, electric vehicles in Boston later this year for trials on public roads.

The Renault Zoe electric cars will be equipped with Nutonomy’s autonomous technology.

By 2025, Lyft plans to provide one billion rides annually through autonomous, electric vehicles.

"We believe that ridesharing, combined with autonomous vehicles, will be the driving force that brings electric vehicles from a tiny portion (~0.1%) of all cars on the road today to a significant majority within 20 years."

Lyft also plans to secure clean energy certificates to cut down emissions from these vehicles. It aims to annually reduce CO2 emissions by at least five million tonnes.

The company’s founders Logan Green and John Zimmer were quoted by Theverge.com as saying: “We believe that ridesharing, combined with autonomous vehicles, will be the driving force that brings electric vehicles from a tiny portion (~0.1%) of all cars on the road today to a significant majority within 20 years.”

The company joined a host of businesses that have pledged to stick to Paris agreement after US President Donald Trump exited from the accord.
