Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that it will progressively replace the streetlights in approximately 500 roads with energy-efficient LED lighting.

The LED street lighting replacement programme will primarily cover lower-trafficked roads and residential areas, where the streetlights have lower wattage.

This decision by the LTA comes after a three-year trial was conducted along Northumberland Road and Tekka Lane, where 17 lamp posts were fitted with LED lights.

"The LED street lighting replacement programme will primarily cover lower-trafficked roads and residential areas."

A total of 4,000 LED streetlights will be installed under this programme, which will begin this month and be completed by mid-2018.

According to LTA, the new LED lighting is expected to result in energy savings of up to 30% compared with the current high-pressure sodium vapour (HPSV) lamps, while meeting the required lighting standards.

LTA is currently running a trial of high-wattage LED lamps along Lorong 1 Toa Payoh to study energy consumption, durability and maintenance challenges.

The trial began in August 2013 and is expected to finish by 2016.
