Austrian traffic technology company SWARCO Traffic has deployed its latest moveable vehicle-activated sign (MVAS) technology in the village of Hulland Ward, Derbyshire, UK.

Designed particularly to be used by parish councils, MVAS are ‘self-deployment’ signs aim to enhance road safety and encourage safer driving speeds.

Parish councillor and project leader David Lewis said: "We are hoping that the new signs help reduce traffic speed and so improve the quality of life for people living in the village."

Relaunched last year with a remodeled design, the new, lighter SWARCO-developed ‘Your Speed Is’ signs feature enhanced battery life.

The signs are moveable so these can be transferred from one post to another in the Derbyshire village.

The signs that feature an LED optical system can be configured for any speed limit. The use of these signs has been approved by the UK Highways Agency.

"We are hoping that the new signs help reduce traffic speed and so improve the quality of life for people living in the village."

The data captured by the signs installed at either end of the main road through the village can be gathered locally, as well as remotely to be used to analyse vehicle speeds at the particular location.

SWARCO head of operations Derek Williamson said: "They flash up the driver’s speed and either thank them for adhering to the limit or ask them to slow down.

"The signs are the result of more than 15 years development, and are a simple and complete solution to an age-old problem that many rural communities face."

SWARCO was approached by the village councillors in an initiative supported by the county council and Aggregate Industries, which is a local employer of the region.

The company has also designed and implemented a flood warning system in Kenilworth.
