SWARCO Traffic has introduced Smart City Messenger, which is a new generation of mobile variable message sign (VMS) that comes with built-in UTMC connectivity, thereby enabling local authorities to have the same level of management and control as with their fixed installations.

This sign can also be controlled from a SWARCO back office system.

The new Smart City Messenger sign includes SWARCO Traffic’s LED technology with a high-contrast ratio, wide viewing angle and character uniformity.

It is intended for use in any temporary traffic management application such as to signpost roadworks or events.

The LEDs operate on a low-current and also feature SWARCO’s patented colour-mixing lens. They offer higher levels of reliability and performance even while consuming less power.  The full colour capability enables display of graphical traffic signs in full range.

SWARCO technical and sales director Carl Dyer said: “The mobile signs have three power options: battery only, lasting seven days before recharge; solar powered, to allow for self-charging; and solar powered with a fuel cell that delivers 100% autonomy and 365 days of operation.

“This takes the flexibility and reliability of mobile signs to a new level, and overcomes one of the biggest headaches in deploying any mobile technology, the reliability of power supply.”

Smart City Messenger comes in a range of different sizes to suit different applications.

It is capable of displaying 4 x 15 characters of TSRGD/TR2516B-compliant text.

The mobile sign is Highways England type approved and on a trailer that is similarly developed to UK standards. Further, it has has been DVLA tested and certified.
