Legacy way

Telvent has secured a $30m contract from the Transcity joint venture to implement the intelligent transportation system (ITS) for Legacy Way in Brisbane City, Australia.

Legacy Way will be a 4.6km toll road tunnel that will link the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass (ICB) at Kelvin Grove. After completion it will connect Brisbane’s western and inner northern suburbs to save 44% of journey time for commuters.

Telvent´s chairman and CEO Ignacio Gonzalez said: "We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Transcity JV on the Legacy Way project, which will lead to better traffic flow management in the Brisbane metropolitan area."

"This project will assist local authorities in their commitment to optimise urban mobility in the interests of creating a safer and more pleasant environment for citizens, thereby improving their quality of life," Gonzalez said.

Telvent will install its SmartMobility Road Suite, based on its own supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA OASyS), which allows centralisation of tunnel infrastructure and traffic management and allows operators to improve safety and security.

Legacy Way completes the missing link of motorway standard road between Brisbane’s Centenary Motorway and the Inner City Bypass (ICB).

Once the tunnel opens the system will offer real-time data enabling operators to respond to any emergency situation occurring within the tunnel. The system can facilitate accurate road and bridge toll collections, collect feeds from many sources and summarise them to provide data and give operators a comprehensive set of tools to manage and secure tunnel and bridge sites.

The system automates violation detection and processing, reducing the time spent on routine tasks and allowing officers to focus on crucial responsibilities such as emergency response and driver assistance, the company said.

Previously, Transcity consortium comprising BMD Constructions, Italian company Ghella and Spanish company Acciona had won a $1.5bn contract to design, build and operate the Legacy Way.

The project is expected to be completed in 2014.

Telvent recently implemented the tunnel control systems for the Despeñaperros tunnels and Las Pedrizas highway in Spain, and the King Abdullah Road project in Saudi Arabia. The company is currently developing the tunnel control system for the new beltway in Sao Paulo, Brazil and the extension of the roads in Arriyadh Old Airport area in Saudi Arabia.
