Tennison Road Bridge

UK rail infrastructure operator Network Rail (NR) has announced the opening of a newly built £10m Tennison Road Bridge in South Norwood, Croydon, UK.

The new bridge, which is 3.5m wider than its predecessor, spans the London Bridge to East Croydon main line.

The Tennison Road Bridge replacement was carried out by Graham Construction.

With bigger carriageway and footpaths, the new bridge replaces a smaller bridge that had served the area since 1922.

Network Rail route asset manager Mark Huband said: "The old bridge had served the local community for over 90 years, but it had become outdated and needed replacing.

"The new bridge will better serve those who use Tennison Road, providing safer access for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians."

Last December, the new bridge was launched over the tracks, causing no disruption to passengers travelling between East Croydon and London Bridge, NR noted.

Graham Construction project manager Rory McFadden said: "Whilst the project was not without its technical challenges, these were overcome through innovative engineering solutions and a collaborative and proactive approach by all parties."

Croydon Council has partly funded and contributed in delivering this first in rail engineering.

Croydon Council cabinet member for transport and environment councillor Kathy Bee said: "This new and wider bridge will last for decades and make a real difference to everyone who uses Tennison Road."
