New Orbital Highway

Concessions and construction firm Vinci has secured an €850m contract for the second phase of the New Orbital Highway in Doha, Qatar.

The project will be carried out by the joint venture led by QDVC, with 51% held by Qatari Diaris, and 49% by VINCI Construction Grands Projets subsidiary, and Qatari Bin Omran Trading & Contracting.

The agreement covers the design and construction of 47km of motorways, six viaducts, 17 bridges and underpasses, and a 320m cut-and-cover tunnel.

This stretch of motorway will comprise a five-lane dual carriageway for light vehicles, along with two truck lanes in each direction.

Work on the project will begin in May, and is expected to take 36 months to complete.

The highway is nearly 200km long, and will connect the new port of the Qatari capital with Ras Laffan in the northern part of the country, bypassing Doha.

It helps ease current traffic congestion, and is preparing to accommodate an estimated increase in road traffic.

Vinci currently operates numerous other projects in Qatar, including the southern works package of the Doha metro’s red line, the light rail project in the new city of Lusail, and the Sheraton underground car park and landscaped gardens in West Bay business district.
