VolkerHighways has commenced work on a £24m contract to upgrade 38,000 street lights with energy efficient LED lamps.

This contract will continue for two years and involve upgrading street lights in Slough, Wokingham and Reading.

It is estimated that the deal will reduce CO2 emissions by 58,000 tonnes.

Slough Borough Council has also included a term maintenance contract for street lights.

This contract will initially run for two years and can be extended by one year.

Following completion of the two-year contract, the project is expected to lead to a combined saving of £1.9m in maintenance costs and £1.4m in energy costs, across the three authorities.

VolkerHighways managing director Alistair Thompson said: "We are delighted to have won this combined contract and to be working with the Slough, Wokingham and Reading Borough Councils, in the delivery of their LED conversion programme.
