Westcotec have patented their own detection system which is less intrusive to the Highway. This removes the use of costly loops and the expensive maintenance regime that these require being kept in good working order.
All our detectors are above ground so if any repairs are required, it is a simple matter to swap out units from the side of the carriageway rather than having to close the whole road to dig up and replace faulty loops, thus avoiding very costly delays to the network.
We use either laser, ultrasonic, thermal or vision devices to measure the height of oncoming vehicles and then send a signal to a VAS further up the road with the appropriate message displayed, the signal may be sent by radio or hardwired if necessary.
We can use two detectors, set a short distance from each other to confirm that an over-height vehicle has passed by and this obviates the need for the loops as a secondary presence check.
We have successfully tested and installed our equipment around the UK and also in very harsh conditions in Northern Sweden at a safety critical industrial complex where it continues to work in the blizzards and extreme cold.
We have many of these running on solar power, and depending on local site conditions, this may be possible but each site will need a visit from our engineers before any recommendation can be made.
