Incompetent and reckless drivers are costing the Sri Lankan economy Rs15bn ($131m) every year, Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said.

Alahapperuma blamed these drivers for causing many fatal accidents, according to dailynews.lk.

Around 35% of drivers get their driving licences through fraudulent activities such as bogus medical certificates, according to the minister.

Alahapperuma said the National Transport Medical Institute in Sri Lanka has introduced a new scheme to provide genuine medical certificates for drivers.
