The US State of Virginia is carrying out a $267m project to reconstruct highways in Gainesville to ease congestion in the area.

The project on Route 29 near Interstate 66 includes opening the final stretch of pavement and widening the interstate highway to Gainesville, scheduled for completion in July.

Planners hope the new interchange will bring relief to traffic where the current traffic lights and grade-level Norfolk Southern tracks contribute to the current bottleneck, according to voices.washingtonpost.com.

Other works such as building two new overpasses, widening six lanes on Route 29, removing driveway entrances and two traffic lights, are expected to be completed in December 2014.

Construction on two detour roads, one on Route 29 and the other on Linton Hall Road, is expected to be completed by the middle of 2012.
