Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, UAE has announced that 30% of the $157.3m Parallel Roads project at the Godolphin District has been completed.

Slated to be completed in the final quarter of 2017, the completion of the project is expected to ease traffic movement on the Shaikh Zayed Road.

RTA Board of Executive Directors director general and chairman Mattar Al Tayer was quoted by Trade Arabia as saying: "The Parallel Roads project, which costs about Dh578m ($157.3m), encompasses the construction of a 3.5km-long flyover comprising three lanes in each direction crossing over the Dubai Water Canal.

"The number of lanes will increase to five in each direction above Godolphin Stables and Al Meydan Street up to Al Quoz Industrial Area."

The 108km flyover, which comprises of three lanes in each direction, stretches from Sheikh Rashid Road in the north to the entrance of Abu Dhabi.

The construction works on two bridges crossing the Dubai Water Canal are expected to be completed in August this year.

"The Parallel Roads project encompasses the construction of a 3.5km-long flyover comprising three lanes in each direction crossing over the Dubai Water Canal."

The aims of the project include improving the existing junction of Al Meydan and Al Khail streets where flyovers are planned to be built in order to provide left turns, as well as reducing congestion at the junction during high traffic hours.

Al Tayer was quoted by Emirates 24/7 as saying: "The project also includes the construction of a two-lane ramp serving the traffic inbound from Al Khail Road heading towards Sharjah, and up to the junction of Al Asayel Road and Oud Metha Road.

"It also includes providing entry and exit points for the Meydan Development Project, upgrading and shifting utility lines in the area, in addition to undertaking lighting and signage works."

The project includes the construction of bridges, as well as surface junctions at the intersection of the Parallel Roads with the crossing roads extending 42km.
