The French Ministry of the Interior has placed an order for an additional 100 autonomous mobile enforcement trailers, as part of its nationwide speed enforcement programme.

The trailers will be placed in locations such as rural roads and work zones, where there is no required power and data connections in order to deploy permanent camera systems, reported Traffictechnologytoday.com.

The French ministry procured 150 enforcement trailers in April last year.

These systems are effective, with single units documenting up to 2,500 speed violations per day.

The autonomous mobile LIDAR systems have the ability to operate on their own for a minimum of five days.

The enforcement trailer is a system for traffic monitoring that makes zero demands on the local infrastructure.

The enforcement trailer system has been jointly developed by Vitronic and CEGELEC Equipments Dynamiques Routiers. It can be easily transported by virtually any vehicle that has a tow-bar.

The measurements are performed by Vitronic’s PoliScan Speed technology, which enables authorities to enforce speed limits for all the vehicles across all lanes simultaneously.

The system is equipped with high-performance batteries that have an ability to supply power for five days.

It also has the ability to monitor variable speed limits and bans on through traffic, specific to certain times, lanes and vehicle classes.

"These systems are effective, with single units documenting up to 2,500 speed violations per day."

An integrated modem transmits case data wirelessly through GSM and enables remote access to the measuring system. This solution can operate autonomously without any human intervention, leading to a significant increase in efficiency.

Once the system is deployed, the trailer can be lowered to ground level, and cannot be moved by unauthorised persons.

The system is well protected against vandalism due to its armored outer shell and alarm system.

The French ministry expects the new system to help minimise around 200 traffic accidents that occur in roads at work zones annually.
