The London Borough of Barnet in the UK has awarded a contract to OpenView Security Solutions to deploy CCTV cameras and software at 52 locations for identifying traffic rule violations.

It aims at creating a network of CCTV-based automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and video analysis system.

The videalert-based platform will be deployed at more than 20 locations, as well as outside 32 schools.

"The introduction of the Videalert CCTV enforcement system will have a big impact."

Barnet Council environment committee chairman Dean Cohen was quoted by Professional Security as saying: "The introduction of the Videalert CCTV enforcement system will have a big impact on helping to make roads safer, improve traffic flows and reduce air pollution."

The new system is expected to be installed from the first quarter of this year only after all road markings and signs are checked at each site.

The technology combines ANPR with video analysis that allows the system to track mobile objects with precision.

Unlike the conventional ANPR-only systems, the new videalert system can capture the specific vehicles that commit the offence.

It will use a single camera to automatically record the number plates of vehicles stopping outside the school premises, thus ensuring road safety of children.

OpenView Security Solutions group sales and marketing director Terry Cox was quoted by Traffic Technology Today as saying: "We have established a reputation as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of CCTV infrastructure solutions to local authorities, through partnering with companies such as Videalert, which have developed innovative and cost-effective compliance solutions that increase safety for the local community.

"As well as being cost-effective to install and maintain, the Videalert platform allows multiple civil traffic enforcement and traffic management applications to run simultaneously, without requiring specific equipment for every point solution.

"The system is also ‘Open Standards-based’, allowing us to provide HD IP CCTV cameras to work with the Videalert platform."
