Russia’s capital city Moscow has implemented an intelligent traffic system (ITS) called PTV Optima developed by German company PTV Group.

The new traffic management system provides the Russian city with exact traffic information in real-time and enables dynamic forecast for a timescale of one minute.

Moscow mayor Sergey Semyonovich Sobyanin, and deputy mayor and head of the department for transport and road infrastructure development Maxim Liksutov said that the newly implemented ITS stands out as one of the best in the world.

PTV Group Traffic Software global sales and marketing vice-president Miller Crockart said: "PTV Optima is the key to successful traffic management.

"To produce a coherent and detailed picture of traffic, PTV Optima collects, compares, validates and combines data from multiple sources."

"PTV Optima is the key to successful traffic management."

Transport authorities can obtain real-time traffic information for the entire road network using PTV Optima which combines real-time data, analytics and validated transport modelling.

During the implementation in Moscow, main focus was on the connection to the city’s signal control systems to help traffic managers to react flexibly to traffic conditions through adaptive changes going forward.

The model-based PTV Optima system depends on a physical interpretation of the traffic network and conditions.

Even the effects of alternative traffic management measures can be simulated in real-time providing ideal support to transport authorities, helping them to select and implement the best strategy from available options.
