The Government of New Zealand has officially started construction on the new Cobham Drive Cycleway in Wellington.

The project forms part of Wellington’s urban cycleway programme and follows the beginning of works to convert the Hutt Road shared path into a cycleway.

In order to synchronise with the coastal environment, the design of the two-way cycleway will feature landscaping and planting that will complement the wind sculptures along the harbour’s edge.

New Zealand Transport Minister Simon Bridges said: “This cycleway will become an iconic feature of Wellington’s eastern gateway.

"This cycleway will become an iconic feature of Wellington’s eastern gateway."

"As a key part of the proposed Great Harbour Way, the Cobham Drive Cycleway will serve as an important link to other planned routes in Miramar and Kilbirnie, and to the central city."

The government has also started public consultations for constructing cycleways in the eastern suburbs, which include options for Evans Bay Parade, and improved biking connections in Kilbirnie and Miramar.

Bridges added: “The Cobham Drive Cycleway and planned eastern routes are part of the government’s Urban Cycleways Programme, a NZ$333m ($240m) investment to build key, high-value urban cycling projects throughout the country."

Options for public consultation will be available at www.transportprojects.org.nz, where people can give feedback.
