Canada's Government of Ontario has revealed that it will be widening the 18km road stretch of Highway 401 from the Credit River in Mississauga to Regional Road 25 in Milton.

The expansion project will see the addition of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in each direction, as well as widening of the existing six-lane configuration to 12 from the Credit River to Winston Churchill Boulevard, and also between Highway 407 ETR / Highway 401 interchange to James Snow Parkway.

The project also includes widening of road between Winston Churchill Boulevard and Highway 407 ETR / Highway 401 interchange and James Snow Parkway to Regional Road 25 to ten lanes.

Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca said: “Highway 401 is a critical highway for commuters and commercial traffic travelling throughout Ontario and the US.

"Highway 401 is a critical highway for commuters and commercial traffic travelling throughout Ontario and the US."

"The addition of both HOV and general purpose lanes is further proof of the province’s commitment to making improvements that will help us manage congestion and improve mobility in the daily commutes of Ontarians travelling across the region."

The government anticipates that expansion of Highway 401 will reduce road traffic congestion, as well as enable better and efficient transportation of goods and address the region's future transport needs.

Infrastructure Ontario’s alternative financing and procurement model is delivering the project, where the risks and financing factors associated with the project will be overseen by the private sector.

In order to strengthen its economy and help people in their everyday lives, the Ontario Government is making significant investments in roads, bridges, and other infrastructure projects.
