New York's government in the US has revealed that progress has been made on the $22.4m project to rehabilitate South Mall Expressway in the city of Albany.

The three-year project is reported to have entered its second year, and the works are being executed by the authorities as part of $21.1bn investment in roads and bridges across the state.

Transport authorities have revealed that the work has been resumed on South Mall Expressway, and due to these works, lanes will be shifted from 17 April.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said:"The South Mall Expressway rehabilitation is critical for residents and commuters, as it is a key route to the Empire State Plaza and government buildings in Albany.

"Last year's construction was performed with minimal disruption to drivers, and as work continues this spring, repairs completed by New York's hard-working men and women will keep this expressway safe, and resilient for years come."

Work on the South Mall Expressway will be carried out within the tunnels and underneath Empire State Plaza to I-787 and Dunn Memorial Bridge in the outbound direction.

Project works will see a replacement of concrete driving surface of the four bridges that carry the expressway over 787 and city streets, and structural repairs will be performed on the four bridges, including joint and bearing replacements.

"The South Mall Expressway rehabilitation is critical for residents and commuters."

The pavements repairs at the tunnel exits will also be covered in the project, and works will be carried out on the connecting ramps.

New York State Department of Transportation commissioner Matthew Driscoll said: "This is another example of governor Cuomo's commitment to rebuilding New York State, while also keeping impacts to travellers to a minimum.

“With the success of the first year of work under our belts, we look forward to continuing the work on this expressway, which will benefit Albany residents, as well as those coming to the Empire State Plaza, the Capitol and the city’s attractions and amenities."

The project is reported to be in line with the governor Cuomo's Driver’s First initiative, as it has been designed to reduce traffic congestion on the expressway.
